On April 29th, a 2-year-old child fell from a height and died due to an elevator malfunction in the Tianrun Garden community of Longdong Building in Qingyang City, Gansu Province. Today (May 5th), a reporter from the New Beijing News learned from the Qingyang Market Supervision Bureau that the district market supervision bureau has intervened in the investigation.

The elevator in question has been discontinued

Ms. Li, a resident of the community, told the Beijing News reporter that on the afternoon of April 29th, when she returned to the community, the incident of falling and death had already occurred, and an ambulance arrived at the scene. She claimed that a mother and son in the incident building encountered an elevator malfunction while riding in the elevator and were stuck between the 24th and 25th floors. During the rescue process, property personnel pried open the elevator door, and a 2-year-old child fell and died. "When picking up the child, she missed it and fell directly to the negative floor," Ms. Li said, adding that the elevator had experienced multiple malfunctions before.

The photo shows that the elevator in question has been blocked by a yellow fence, and the information on the elevator's interior signs shows that the annual inspection time has arrived. A notice posted by a property management company on April 29th stated, "Due to elevator malfunction, the use has been suspended, causing inconvenience. We hope all owners can understand."

In response to the issue of residents reporting multiple malfunctions of the elevator involved, which still occur frequently after maintenance, the reporter called the person in charge of the engineering department of the property management company in the community. The person responded that they were "unaware" of the incident and hung up the phone.

Today, staff from the Office of Qingyang City Market Supervision Bureau told the New Beijing News that the district government and the district market supervision bureau are investigating this matter. The elevator has not resumed operation due to a malfunction and maintenance, and the aftermath of the accident is being dealt with.
